Telemecanique Fork & Label Sensors: XUVE, XUVU and XUY Explained
Optical and ultrasonic forks for paper, film and transparent labels β plus a general-purpose fork for parts and edges.
A fork sensor has the emitter and receiver fixed in one U-shaped body, so there is nothing to align. Telemecanique offers three very different forks: the infrared XUVE04 for high-precision label gaps, the ultrasonic XUVU06 for transparent labels, and the XUY fork for parts and edges. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason a labeller skips or double-dispenses. This article shows how to choose correctly.
Optical or Ultrasonic Fork?
| Label material | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Paper label on paper or glassine liner | XUVE04 (infrared) | High precision: Β±0.05 mm at 150 m/min |
| Opaque film label | XUVE04 (infrared) | Clear optical difference between label and liner |
| Transparent label on transparent liner | XUVU06 (ultrasonic) | Sound sees material thickness, not colour or clarity |
| Metallised or printed labels | XUVU06 (ultrasonic) | Unaffected by reflective surfaces and print |
| Parts, tabs, holes, edges | XUYFANEP40015 | Wider 15 Γ 42 mm fork for objects, self-teach setup |

Getting Clean Label Signals
- Keep the web in the fork centre. The liner should run through the middle of the slot, not rubbing either arm.
- Mount close to the peel edge. The shorter the distance from sensor to dispensing edge, the more accurate the label position.
- Set up on the real roll. Adjust on the actual label and liner β a different batch can have a different thickness or opacity.
- Watch for static and splices. Film webs can flutter; a guide roller before the fork keeps them steady.
- Use shielded M8 cordsets. Keep sensor cables away from motor and servo cables on the labeller.
Fork & Label Sensor FAQs
Which Telemecanique fork sensor detects transparent labels?
The XUVU06M3KSNM8. It uses ultrasonic sound instead of light, so a clear label on a clear liner still gives a strong signal. Optical forks like the XUVE04 are designed for opaque paper and film labels.
How fast can the XUVE04M3KSNM8 run?
Telemecanique specifies label speeds up to 200 m/min with a repeatability of Β±0.05 mm at 150 m/min and a 0.1 ms response time.
What is the smallest label and gap these forks can see?
Both XUVE04 and XUVU06 are specified for labels and gaps from 2 mm.
What is the XUYFANEP40015 used for?
It is a general-purpose infrared fork sensor with a 15 Γ 42 mm opening and self-teach setup, used for detecting parts, edges, tabs or holes that pass through the fork rather than for label webs.
How are these sensors wired?
All three run on 12β24 V DC with an M8 4-pin connector and PNP/NPN switching outputs. The XUV label forks offer two programmable NO/NC outputs; the XUYFANEP40015 has one output programmable as NO or NC.
