Contrast sensors — also called colour mark or registration mark sensors — read the printed mark on packaging film so the machine cuts, seals or applies the label in the right place. What a contrast sensor actually does
An ordinary photoelectric sensor answers one question: is something there or not. A contrast sensor answers a different one: has the printed mark just passed? It shines a white or coloured LED onto a moving web and watches the amount of light coming back. A black registration mark on white film reflects far less light than the film around it, and that step in the returned signal is what triggers the output.
Because it is measuring a difference in reflectance rather than an absolute colour, a contrast sensor works on almost any mark and background pair as long as there is enough contrast between them — which is why it, and not a true colour sensor, is what sits on a flow wrapper or a form-fill-seal machine.

Contrast sensor
Detects the grey-level step between a mark and its background. Very fast response, teach-in setup, used for registration and cut-to-mark on packaging lines.
True colour sensor
Compares the actual colour of the target against taught colour values. Slower, but able to tell red from green at the same brightness — needed for sorting rather than registration.
Photoelectric sensor
Detects presence or absence of an object. The right choice for counting, jam detection and end-of-travel, not for reading printed marks.
Luminescence sensor
Uses UV light to see marks that are invisible under white light — useful when the print cannot be seen against the substrate at all.

How to pick the right one
- Measure the mark, not the machine. The smallest mark you must see sets the required spot size, and the spot size sets the series.
- Check the stand-off. TL46 and TLµ are set up for short, fixed distances; TL50 gives you more room when the sensor cannot sit close to the web.
- Match the light source to the mark. White light is the general-purpose answer; a coloured or RGB source helps when mark and background differ in hue more than in brightness.
- Confirm the output. PNP and NPN versions are different part numbers — check what the PLC input card expects before ordering.
- Watch the web speed. Fast lines need the shorter response time versions; ask us if you are near the limit.
- Cable or M12 plug. The connection type is built into the code, so decide it at the ordering stage.
