Ultrasonic sensors measure distance with sound, so they see what light-based sensors miss β clear film, glass, shiny metal, black plastic, liquid levels and heaps of loose material. How they work, and why that matters
The sensor emits a burst of high-frequency sound and times how long the echo takes to come back. Distance is derived from that flight time, which means the sensor is measuring the surface of the object, not its colour, transparency or shine. That single property is why an ultrasonic sensor solves problems a photoelectric one cannot.
It also explains the limitations. Sound needs a surface that reflects it, so soft foam, thick felt and loose fibre absorb the pulse and give unreliable readings. The speed of sound changes with air temperature, which is why many of these sensors compensate internally. And the sensor cannot hear an echo while it is still transmitting, so there is a blind zone close to the face where nothing can be detected at all.

Transparent objects
Clear PET bottles, glass panels and film webs are effectively invisible to many photoelectric sensors. Sound bounces off them exactly as it would off cardboard.
Shiny and dark surfaces
Polished metal deflects a light beam away from the receiver; matt black absorbs it. Neither affects an ultrasonic reading.
Liquid level
Tanks, sumps and open channels β the sensor looks down at the surface without contacting the liquid, so there is nothing to corrode or clean.
Bulk material
Grain, granules, powder and aggregate in hoppers and silos, where the surface is uneven and no mechanical float would survive.
Dusty air
Ultrasonic pulses pass through airborne dust and light mist that would blind an optical sensor.
Loop and sag control
Watching a hanging loop of web or wire between two drives, where an analogue output feeds the speed loop directly.

Specifying an ultrasonic sensor
- Minimum and maximum distance. Both matter β the blind zone sets how close you can mount it.
- Switching or analogue. A switch for presence and level alarms; 4β20Β mA or 0β10Β V where the PLC needs the actual distance.
- Beam angle. A narrow beam avoids picking up tank walls and guards; a wider one is more forgiving on uneven targets.
- Target surface. Hard and flat is ideal. Foam, fabric and loose fibre absorb the pulse β tell us if that is what you are measuring.
- Temperature swing. Large changes shift the speed of sound; specify a compensated version for outdoor or oven-side duty.
- Mounting angle. Aim square at the target. A surface tilted more than a few degrees deflects the echo away from the sensor.

Frequently asked questions
What is an ultrasonic sensor used for?
Measuring distance or detecting presence with sound rather than light. It is the usual answer for clear, shiny or dark objects, for liquid level in tanks, and for bulk material in hoppers β anywhere an optical sensor struggles.
What is the blind zone?
The dead band immediately in front of the sensor face where it cannot detect anything, because it is still transmitting when the echo would arrive. Mount the sensor further back than the blind zone or it will never see the target.
Will it work on foam or fabric?
Often poorly. Soft, porous materials absorb the sound pulse instead of reflecting it. If that is your target, tell us β a different technology may be the right answer.
Can it measure liquid level in a tank?
Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. The sensor mounts above the liquid and never touches it, so there is nothing to corrode. Keep it clear of the fill stream and the tank wall so it does not pick up a false echo.
