Introduction
If you have spent any time specifying position sensing for machinery, you have come across a Telemecanique limit switch. The blue-and-grey bodies are fixtures on conveyors, machine tools, presses and material handling equipment across Indian plants — and many of them have been running for well over a decade.
But buyers hit the same three problems: the naming has changed, the catalogue is enormous, and it is not obvious which part number actually fits the job. This guide covers all three.
Is Telemecanique still Schneider Electric?
This is the single most common source of confusion, and most suppliers still get it wrong.
No — not any more. Schneider Electric sold its industrial sensors business, Telemecanique Sensors, to YAGEO Corporation. The deal was first agreed in October 2022 and completed on 31 October 2023, at an enterprise value of €723 million.
What that means in practice:
- Telemecanique Sensors is now a YAGEO company, not a Schneider Electric brand.
- The OsiSense XC product line, part numbers and form factors carried over. An XCKP2145N12 is still an XCKP2145N12.
- You will still find plenty of stock, documentation and listings branded “Schneider Electric / Telemecanique”, particularly older inventory and third-party sellers. That is legacy branding, not a counterfeit signal.
- Schneider Electric continues to sell its own limit switches under its own catalogue. Those are a different product line from Telemecanique OsiSense XC.
If you are cross-referencing an old drawing or a decade-old BOM, work from the part number rather than the brand name on the label.
The OsiSense XC range, explained
Telemecanique groups its standard limit switches into four families. Picking the right family first makes the rest of the selection straightforward.
Compact range — XCKP, XCKT, XCKD, XCKN
The workhorses. XCKP, XCKT and XCKD use a metal head and are the most widely distributed, so they are the easiest to source at short notice. XCKN is the monolithic plastic version, intended for repetitive machine duty where you want lower cost per point.
Classic range — XCKM, XCKL, XCKS, XCKW
Medium-duty metal body switches. The practical difference between the first two is cable entries: XCKM has three cable entries, XCKL has one. XCKS is the plastic format built to the CENELEC EN 50041 standard dimensions, which matters if you are replacing an existing EN 50041 switch and need the mounting to match. XCKW is a wireless, battery-less plastic switch in the same EN 50041 format.
Miniature range — XCMD, XCMN, XCMV, XCMW
For tight installations. XCMD is the one to know: it is a miniature switch that shares the same heads as the compact range and offers positive opening contacts — so you get compact-range head flexibility in a smaller envelope. XCMV ships with Deutsch or AMP connectors for mobile and vehicle-mounted equipment.
Industrial range — XCKJ
The heavy end. XCKJ has the most robust head in its category, snap positive contacts, and is available with a fixed or plug-in body.

How the modular head-and-body system works
The reason the OsiSense XC catalogue looks so large is that it is modular. A switch is a body plus a head, and the same body accepts many different heads.
That has two consequences worth planning around:
- You can standardise your spares. Stock one body type and a handful of heads, and you cover far more machine positions than stocking complete switches.
- You can repair rather than replace. A damaged roller lever usually means a new head, not a new switch — which is why you will see head and body part numbers (the ZC-prefixed references, such as ZCMD29L1 or ZCKM1H29) sold separately alongside the complete XCK/XCM assemblies.
When you see a complete part number like XCKP2145N12, read it as a pre-assembled body-and-head combination. When you see a ZC prefix, you are looking at a component of that assembly.
The specifications that actually matter
Here is a real example — the XCMD2102C12, a miniature switch — to show what a full specification looks like:

When you are comparing quotes, these are the five fields that decide whether two “equivalent” switches really are equivalent:
- Head type and approach direction — a roller plunger and a roller lever are not interchangeable, and lateral approach direction determines how you mount it.
- Contact configuration and action — 1 NC + 1 NO is the common default, but snap action versus slow break changes the behaviour completely.
- IP rating — specify it before readers over- or under-specify; IP65 and IP67 are not interchangeable.
- Connection method — M12 connector versus cable gland changes your installation time and your spares strategy.
- Positive opening — covered next, and non-negotiable if the switch has a safety role.
Positive opening contacts: the safety point people miss
If a limit switch is doing anything safety-related — guard position, end-of-travel protection, interlocking — a standard switch is not sufficient. You need positive opening operation to IEC/EN 60947-5-1.
The principle is mechanical: in a positive opening contact, the actuator drives the NC contact open through a rigid mechanical link. If the contact welds shut, the movement of the actuator physically forces it apart. A conventional switch relies on a spring to open the contact — and a spring cannot be trusted to overcome a welded contact.
Devices with this capability carry the standard’s arrow-in-a-circle symbol on the body and datasheet. In the Telemecanique range, positive opening is a defining feature of the XCMD miniature range and the XCKJ industrial range, among others.
Two cautions:
- Positive opening is a property of the contact, not the switch family. Always confirm it on the specific part number’s datasheet.
- A positive opening switch is not automatically a safety interlock. For guard door applications you generally want a dedicated interlock or guard locking switch, not a standard limit switch. That is a different product category with different standards behind it.
Reading a Telemecanique part number
The part numbers follow a consistent shape:

The prefix tells you the family and size class reliably. The middle digits encode head style, actuator and contact arrangement — but the coding is dense and varies between families, so always confirm the middle block against the manufacturer’s datasheet rather than assuming from a similar-looking number. Getting the last block wrong is the most common ordering error, because 1/2″ NPT and ISO M20 entries look interchangeable in a photograph and are not.
Sourcing in India: what to plan for

- Compact range availability is best. XCKP, XCKT and XCKD are the most widely distributed, so they are the safest choice when you need short lead times.
- Specialist variants take longer. Wireless (XCKW, XCMW) and connectorised (XCMV) variants are lower volume and are more often indent items.
- Verify the source. Position switches are a commonly counterfeited category. Ask for the datasheet reference and certification marks (CCC, CSA, UL) against the exact part number, and be cautious of pricing far below the market.
- Match the standard, not just the brand. If your specification says EN 50041 format with 1 NC + 1 NO positive opening contacts at IP66, several manufacturers can meet it. Writing the specification that way rather than naming a part number gives you a second source when lead times slip.
Frequently asked questions
Is Telemecanique the same as Schneider Electric?
Not any more. Schneider Electric sold Telemecanique Sensors to YAGEO Corporation, with the sale completing on 31 October 2023. Product lines and part numbers carried over, but the two are now separate businesses.
What does OsiSense XC mean?
OsiSense is Telemecanique’s sensor product family name; XC is the limit switch series within it. XC Standard covers the compact, classic, miniature and industrial ranges described above.
What is the difference between XCKM and XCKL?
