When there is no room for a standard M18 sensor, a miniature photoelectric sensor is the answer. The Telemecanique XUM8APXBL2 packs background suppression, a 1000 Hz switching frequency and IP67 protection into a small plastic housing. It detects objects of almost any colour within 0.3 m and ignores what is behind them. Here is how it works, where it fits best and how to set it up.
Why Background Suppression Beats a Simple Diffuse Sensor
Triangulation
The receiver measures where the reflected spot lands, not how bright it is — so distance, not colour, decides the switching point.
Dark targets
Black or dark-coloured products switch at almost the same distance as white ones, unlike a basic diffuse sensor.
Background ignored
A shiny conveyor frame or wall behind the target stays invisible once it is beyond the set range.

Setting Up an XUM8 Sensor
- Mount it square to the target. Aim the lens at the product path using a rigid bracket so vibration does not shift the spot.
- Place the target at the working distance. Put a real product where the sensor must see it, inside the 0.3 m range.
- Adjust the potentiometer. Turn until the output LED lights on the target, then remove the target and check that the background does not switch the output.
- Choose NO or NC. Select the output logic your PLC programme expects.
- Run at production speed. Confirm one clean pulse per product with no chatter at the edges.

What does background suppression mean on the XUM8APXBL2?
The sensor measures the angle of the reflected light rather than just its strength. It switches on objects inside its set range (up to 0.3 m) and ignores anything further away, even a bright or shiny background.
Is the XUM8APXBL2 PNP or NPN?
It has a PNP output that can be set as normally open or normally closed, and runs on 12–24 V DC with reverse-polarity protection.
How fast is the XUM8APXBL2?
Telemecanique specifies a switching frequency of 1000 Hz and a response time of 0.5 ms — fast enough for most conveyor counting and small-part detection.
How do I set the sensing range?
Turn the sensitivity potentiometer with the target in place until the output LED switches on, then check that the background alone does not switch it.
Can the XUM8 sensor be used outdoors or in wash-down?
The plastic PBT housing is rated IP67, which protects against dust and temporary immersion. For heavy wash-down with chemicals, check the datasheet for your cleaning agents.
