A photoelectric sensor detects the presence, absence or edge of an object by the light it interrupts or reflects, so nothing has to touch the target. The three sensing modes behave very differently in practice: through-beam gives the longest range and the most reliable detection but needs power and wiring on both sides; retro-reflective puts emitter and receiver in one housing and bounces the beam off a prism reflector; diffuse needs no reflector at all but its range depends on how reflective the target is. Polarised retro-reflective models add a filter that stops shiny targets from being mistaken for the reflector.
