A right-angle tip lets you sense across a gap the sensor body cannot face directly: under a guard, alongside a moving web, or into the side of a chute where there is depth but no room to point a straight fibre at the target. The fibre routes flat and the light exits at ninety degrees, so the whole assembly sits in a fraction of the space a barrel sensor would need.
Fibre optic cables carry no electronics at the sensing point. Nothing at the tip can be damaged by heat, wash-down or electrical noise, and the amplifier sits somewhere safe and accessible — which is why fibres are the usual answer for oven exits, weld cells and cramped machine interiors.
