10-Port M12 Distribution Boxes: 20 Signals on One Cable
Most brands stop at 8 ports. A 10-port M12 distribution box carries 20 signals on one home-run, replacing two smaller boxes. When and why to use one.

Here is a gap most buyers do not realise exists: the majority of established distribution box ranges stop at 8 ports. Autonics, and the main German brands, all top out there. Yet plenty of machines carry eighteen or twenty sensors in one area. A 10-port M12 distribution box fills that gap, putting twenty signals on a single home-run cable, and on the right machine it removes an entire second box and cable from the bill of materials.
The gap in the market
Walk through the standard catalogues and you will find 4-, 6- and 8-port boxes in abundance and almost nothing above 8 as a catalogue item. That leaves a real awkwardness for high-density stations: a run with eighteen sensors has to be split across two boxes, with two home-run cables, two mounting positions and two sets of panel terminations, even though the sensors sit together. The 10-port box exists precisely to solve that.
What a 10-port box does
A 10-port dual-channel box provides ten M12 ports carrying two signals each, twenty signals in total, all combined onto one home-run cable. It is the highest signal density available in a single passive box, and it uses the same 5-pin A-coded pinout and the same sensor cordsets as its smaller siblings, so nothing else about your wiring changes.
Where it wins
- Long conveyors and accumulation tables, where sensors are spread along a run served by one box.
- Rotary fillers and rinser-filler-capper monoblocks, which pack many cylinders and sensors into one area.
- Multi-station special-purpose machines with a dense sensor cluster.
- High-density pneumatic stations, where ten double-acting cylinders bring twenty signals to one place.
- Any station currently forced to use two smaller boxes because nothing larger was available.
The bill-of-materials saving
Consider a station with twenty signals. Built from two 6-port boxes plus an 8-port, or two boxes and two home-runs, you pay for two boxes, two trunk cables, two sets of glands and two sets of panel terminations, and you occupy two mounting positions. One 10-port box does it with a single box, a single cable, one gland and one set of terminations. The saving is not just the second box; it is the second cable run and the tray space it needed.
How to size and specify
- Use a 10-port box where a single sensor cluster exceeds what an 8-port can hold, rather than splitting across two boxes.
- Choose dual channel so pneumatic cylinders occupy one port each, giving the full twenty-signal capacity.
- Pick the home-run length for the mounting position: a 2 m tail for a box near the panel, 5 m for mid-span, 10 m for the far end of a long conveyor.
- Confirm the PLC has enough spare inputs to receive twenty signals from the one cable.
- Specify a potted IP67 build so a box carrying twenty signals is not a single point of failure in a harsh spot.
Re-costing an existing machine standard
If your machine standard was built around 8-port boxes because that was what the catalogue offered, it is worth re-costing the dense stations. On a run with eighteen to twenty sensors, moving to a single 10-port box removes an entire second home-run and its terminations, which usually more than pays for the slightly larger box.
