Datalogic AV500 — Product Overview

The Datalogic AV500 is a 5 MP image based scanner aimed squarely at logistics: parcel sortation, warehouse conveyors, e-commerce despatch and automotive intralogistics, where the reader has to sit well clear of the conveyor and still resolve a shipping label reliably.

It uses a 2560 × 1936 sensor at 32 frames per second with a liquid lens in 16, 25 and 35 mm focal lengths, giving a 500 – 2200 mm reading distance and a 400 – 1300 mm depth of field — wide enough to handle mixed carton heights without re-focusing between items. The field of view scales from 164 × 123 mm at the near end to 800 × 600 mm at the far end.

The AV500 reads 1D, 2D, DPM, postal and pharmacode symbologies, grades code quality to ISO/IEC 15416, ISO/IEC 16022 / 18004 and ISO/IEC 29158 (AIM DPM), and carries a dual laser aimer, Green Spot good read feedback, anti sulphur protection and IP65 sealing. Multiple units are tied together with Datalogic SyncNet technology in master/slave or Ethernet point to point mode, which is how multi side reading arrays are built up. Full specifications and equivalent models follow.

Connectivity Modes two connectivity modes it provides greater flexibility for building multi-scanner systems and simplifies integration into automation applications.
User Interface / Feedback > 360-degree bezel feedback technology Visible from all angles. Operators can instantly see scan status without changing position

Equivalent Models

Alternative readers in the same class from Cognex, Keyence, Zebra — shown underneath the Datalogic AV500 as comparable options, not as certified replacements.

Please read before you substitute. The models below are presented as comparable alternatives in the same resolution and application class. They are not claimed to be technically interchangeable with the Datalogic AV500 in every application. Final equivalence must be confirmed against your actual application, full specification, communication interface, mounting and optical geometry, achieved read rate on your own samples, and compatibility with your existing controls, software and spares. Where a project is safety-, regulatory- or validation-critical, run a sample trial before you standardise.

How to Confirm a True Equivalent

Six checks that decide whether an alternative reader is genuinely equivalent for your line.

  • ApplicationDoes the alternative reader actually cover your code type, marking process, substrate and surface finish? A reader that matches on paper can still fail on a low-contrast laser mark.
  • SpecificationsCompare sensor resolution, field of view, depth of field and frame rate at your real working distance — not at the manufacturer's best case.
  • InterfaceCheck the fieldbus and protocol list against your PLC or line controller: PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP, Modbus, RS232 and OPC UA support all differ between brands.
  • MountingHousing dimensions, connector orientation, cable exit and bracket pattern decide whether a swap is a bolt-on or a panel redesign.
  • PerformanceValidate the achieved read rate on your own sample parts at line speed, not on a demonstration code.
  • CompatibilityConfirm configuration software, licensing, spare parts availability, and whether your maintenance team already holds the tooling and training for that brand.

Typical Applications

Parcel and postal sortation, warehouse and distribution centre conveyors, e-commerce despatch, automotive intralogistics, and packaging line traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Datalogic AV500 used for?
It is a fixed, image based reader for long working distance applications — typically parcel and carton handling on a conveyor, where the camera has to be mounted 0.5 to 2.2 m from the label and still read it at line speed. Its 5 MP sensor and 400 – 1300 mm depth of field are what make mixed height cartons practical without mechanical refocusing.
How does SyncNet differ from a simple master/slave setup?
SyncNet is Datalogic's own synchronisation layer for tying several AV500 units into one logical reading station, so that reads from multiple sides of the same item are consolidated into a single result. It supports master/slave and Ethernet point to point connectivity modes.
Does the AV500 read direct part marks?
Yes — 1D, 2D, DPM, postal and pharmacode symbologies are supported. That said, at logistics working distances the dominant application is printed shipping labels; for DPM at close range a Matrix 220 XAI or Matrix 320 is usually the better fit.
What are the equivalent models to the AV500?
In the same 5 MP class you will normally be quoted the Keyence SR-5000, the Cognex DataMan 395 and the Zebra FS40. The comparison table on this page shows the published differences in sensor, working distance, illumination and networking.
