Datalogic Matrix 120 — Product Overview

The Datalogic Matrix 120 is the smallest image based fixed industrial scanner in the Matrix family, built for machine builders and OEMs who have to read a 1D, 2D or direct part marked code inside a space where a full size camera simply will not fit. It is a self contained reader — sensor, optics, illumination, decoder and Ethernet interface in one housing — so there is no separate controller to mount, wire or licence.

It is supplied in two sensor configurations. The WVGA version (752 × 480 pixels) is the high speed, short range option at up to 57 frames per second, and the wide angle 1.2 MP version (1280 × 960 pixels) trades a little speed for finer resolution and a larger field of view. Both read 1D, 2D, DPM, Digimarc, postal and pharmacode symbologies, both carry Datalogic's Green Spot good read feedback, and both are rated IP65 with anti sulphur protection and ESD safety.

This page sets out the Matrix 120's full published specification, then lists the equivalent readers in the same resolution class from Keyence, Cognex and SICK so you can compare like for like before you raise a purchase order.

Equivalent Models

Alternative readers in the same class from Cognex, Keyence, SICK — shown underneath the Datalogic Matrix 120 as comparable options, not as certified replacements.

Please read before you substitute. The models below are presented as comparable alternatives in the same resolution and application class. They are not claimed to be technically interchangeable with the Datalogic Matrix 120 in every application. Final equivalence must be confirmed against your actual application, full specification, communication interface, mounting and optical geometry, achieved read rate on your own samples, and compatibility with your existing controls, software and spares. Where a project is safety-, regulatory- or validation-critical, run a sample trial before you standardise.

How to Confirm a True Equivalent

Six checks that decide whether an alternative reader is genuinely equivalent for your line.

  • ApplicationDoes the alternative reader actually cover your code type, marking process, substrate and surface finish? A reader that matches on paper can still fail on a low-contrast laser mark.
  • SpecificationsCompare sensor resolution, field of view, depth of field and frame rate at your real working distance — not at the manufacturer's best case.
  • InterfaceCheck the fieldbus and protocol list against your PLC or line controller: PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP, Modbus, RS232 and OPC UA support all differ between brands.
  • MountingHousing dimensions, connector orientation, cable exit and bracket pattern decide whether a swap is a bolt-on or a panel redesign.
  • PerformanceValidate the achieved read rate on your own sample parts at line speed, not on a demonstration code.
  • CompatibilityConfirm configuration software, licensing, spare parts availability, and whether your maintenance team already holds the tooling and training for that brand.

Typical Applications

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Matrix 120 WVGA and the Matrix 120 1.2 MP WA?
The WVGA model uses a 752 × 480 sensor with a 4 mm lens, a 95 × 54 mm field of view and a 25 – 165 mm reading distance at up to 57 frames per second. The wide angle 1.2 MP model uses a 1280 × 960 sensor with a 6 mm lens, a 130 × 98 mm field of view and a 30 – 200 mm reading distance at 36 frames per second. Choose WVGA for the fastest throughput on larger codes, and the 1.2 MP WA where the code is small or the field of view has to be wider.
Can the Matrix 120 read direct part marked (DPM) codes?
Yes. Both configurations decode 1D, 2D, DPM, Digimarc, postal and pharmacode symbologies. As with any DPM application, the achievable read rate depends on the marking process, the substrate and the surface finish, so a sample based feasibility check is recommended before standardising.
Does the Matrix 120 support code quality grading?
Yes. It supports 1D grading to ISO/IEC 15416 and 2D grading to ISO/IEC 16022 / 18004 and ISO/IEC 29158 (AIM DPM), which lets you flag deteriorating print or marking quality before the parts leave the line.
What interfaces does the Matrix 120 provide?
Ethernet 10/100 Mbit/s with TCP/IP, UDP, FTP, PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP and SLMP, plus Datalogic ID NET reader networking and pass through, master/slave and Ethernet point to point connectivity modes. Power input is 5 – 30 V DC.
Which readers are considered equivalent to the Matrix 120?
In the same resolution class you will usually see the Keyence SR-750 and SR-1000N, the Cognex DataMan 262X and DataMan 80, and the SICK Lector61x and Lector62x. They are comparable in sensor class and application, not identical in specification — the comparison table on this page shows where they differ.
