Datalogic Matrix 220 — Product Overview

The Datalogic Matrix 220 is the step up from the Matrix 120 for applications where the code position, the code size or the distance to the part varies from one cycle to the next. Its 1280 × 960 sensor is paired with an electronic (liquid) lens in 7 mm and 12 mm focal lengths, so the reader refocuses electronically instead of being set once mechanically — useful on lines that handle mixed product heights or several part variants on the same fixture.

Two configurations are available. The STD model is the general purpose reader, with HDR image support and reading down to 2 mil code resolution. The XAI model adds Datalogic's AI based decoding and the DecodeX software feature, and pushes reading capability down to 1 mil DPM code resolution — the configuration to specify for laser marked, dot peened or chemically etched codes on plastic, glass, metal and battery components.

Both configurations share five illumination options (white, white high power, red with polariser and diffuser, red high power with polariser, and a diffused option), Green Spot good read feedback, anti sulphur protection, a 90° rotating connector block, anti YAG laser protection, an ESD safe housing and IP65 / IP67 sealing. Below you will find the full published specification, followed by the equivalent readers in the same class from Keyence, Cognex, SICK and Zebra.

Equivalent Models

Alternative readers in the same class from Cognex, Keyence, SICK, Zebra — shown underneath the Datalogic Matrix 220 as comparable options, not as certified replacements.

Please read before you substitute. The models below are presented as comparable alternatives in the same resolution and application class. They are not claimed to be technically interchangeable with the Datalogic Matrix 220 in every application. Final equivalence must be confirmed against your actual application, full specification, communication interface, mounting and optical geometry, achieved read rate on your own samples, and compatibility with your existing controls, software and spares. Where a project is safety-, regulatory- or validation-critical, run a sample trial before you standardise.

How to Confirm a True Equivalent

Six checks that decide whether an alternative reader is genuinely equivalent for your line.

  • ApplicationDoes the alternative reader actually cover your code type, marking process, substrate and surface finish? A reader that matches on paper can still fail on a low-contrast laser mark.
  • SpecificationsCompare sensor resolution, field of view, depth of field and frame rate at your real working distance — not at the manufacturer's best case.
  • InterfaceCheck the fieldbus and protocol list against your PLC or line controller: PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP, Modbus, RS232 and OPC UA support all differ between brands.
  • MountingHousing dimensions, connector orientation, cable exit and bracket pattern decide whether a swap is a bolt-on or a panel redesign.
  • PerformanceValidate the achieved read rate on your own sample parts at line speed, not on a demonstration code.
  • CompatibilityConfirm configuration software, licensing, spare parts availability, and whether your maintenance team already holds the tooling and training for that brand.

Typical Applications

Electronics and semiconductor, solar, packaging, automotive component marking, OEM kiosks, healthcare and pharma, tyre marking, and DPM code reading on plastic, glass, metal and battery cells.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Matrix 220 STD and the Matrix 220 XAI?
Both use the same 1280 × 960 sensor and 7 / 12 mm electronic lens. The STD offers HDR image support, a 40 – 600 mm reading distance and reads down to 2 mil code resolution. The XAI adds AI based decoding plus the DecodeX software feature, reads down to 1 mil DPM code resolution, and works over 40 – 400 mm. Specify XAI when the marking is low contrast, deformed or direct part marked; specify STD for printed labels and good quality marks.
What does the electronic lens change in practice?
The liquid lens refocuses under software control rather than by hand, so one reader can cover several product heights or code distances without a mechanical re-setup between changeovers. It also removes the need to break the seal on the housing to adjust focus.
Does the Matrix 220 grade code quality?
Yes. Grading is available to ISO/IEC 15416 for 1D and to ISO/IEC 16022 / 18004 and ISO/IEC 29158 (AIM DPM) for 2D codes.
What is anti YAG protection and why does it matter?
Anti YAG filtering protects the camera sensor from exposure to the laser used in laser marking stations. If the reader is mounted in or near a laser marking cell, it is the feature that protects the sensor from premature damage. The Matrix 220 offers it on both configurations.
Which readers are considered equivalent to the Matrix 220?
The usual alternatives in this class are the Keyence SR-1000 and SRX-100, the Cognex DataMan 280 and DataMan 290, the SICK Lector62x and the Zebra FS20. They are comparable in sensor class and intended use — the side by side table on this page shows where the published specifications diverge.
