Datalogic Matrix 830 — Product Overview

The Datalogic Matrix 830 is a high resolution fixed industrial reader for applications where one camera has to cover a wide conveyor and still resolve a small code. Its 6000 × 2660 pixel sensor (16 MP) at 30 frames per second delivers a 700 – 1100 mm horizontal field of view with a 310 – 510 mm vertical field, over a 600 – 2000 mm reading distance.

The wide, low aspect ratio sensor is deliberate: on a belt, the useful image is a strip, not a square, so the pixels are placed where the parcels actually are. Optics are liquid lens in 16 mm and 25 mm focal lengths, with a 300 – 600 mm depth of field and white illumination.

The Matrix 830 reads 1D, 2D, stacked, postal and DPM codes, grades code quality to ISO/IEC 15416, ISO/IEC 16022 / 18004 and ISO/IEC 29158 (AIM DPM), and carries a dual laser aimer, Green Spot good read feedback, anti sulphur protection and IP65 sealing. Units are combined into multi side reading stations with Datalogic SyncNet4 technology in primary/secondary or Ethernet point to point mode, and the reader offers 3 digital inputs and 2 digital outputs with Ethernet/IP, TCP/IP and RS232 interfaces.

Equivalent Models

Alternative readers in the same class from Cognex, Keyence, Zebra — shown underneath the Datalogic Matrix 830 as comparable options, not as certified replacements.

Please read before you substitute. The models below are presented as comparable alternatives in the same resolution and application class. They are not claimed to be technically interchangeable with the Datalogic Matrix 830 in every application. Final equivalence must be confirmed against your actual application, full specification, communication interface, mounting and optical geometry, achieved read rate on your own samples, and compatibility with your existing controls, software and spares. Where a project is safety-, regulatory- or validation-critical, run a sample trial before you standardise.

How to Confirm a True Equivalent

Six checks that decide whether an alternative reader is genuinely equivalent for your line.

  • ApplicationDoes the alternative reader actually cover your code type, marking process, substrate and surface finish? A reader that matches on paper can still fail on a low-contrast laser mark.
  • SpecificationsCompare sensor resolution, field of view, depth of field and frame rate at your real working distance — not at the manufacturer's best case.
  • InterfaceCheck the fieldbus and protocol list against your PLC or line controller: PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP, Modbus, RS232 and OPC UA support all differ between brands.
  • MountingHousing dimensions, connector orientation, cable exit and bracket pattern decide whether a swap is a bolt-on or a panel redesign.
  • PerformanceValidate the achieved read rate on your own sample parts at line speed, not on a demonstration code.
  • CompatibilityConfirm configuration software, licensing, spare parts availability, and whether your maintenance team already holds the tooling and training for that brand.

Typical Applications

Transportation and logistics, distribution and retail, and manufacturing traceability — typically wide belt sortation, cross belt sorters and multi side reading tunnels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Matrix 830 sensor 6000 × 2660 rather than a conventional 4:3 shape?
Because the reading area on a conveyor is a wide strip. A wide aspect sensor puts the available pixels across the belt where the parcels travel, instead of wasting resolution above and below it. In practice that means one reader can cover a wider belt at the same code resolution.
What reading distance and field of view does the Matrix 830 achieve?
A 600 – 2000 mm reading distance with a 300 – 600 mm depth of field, and a 700 – 1100 mm horizontal by 310 – 510 mm vertical field of view depending on the lens and mounting height. Lenses are 16 mm and 25 mm liquid lens.
How are multiple Matrix 830 readers combined into a tunnel?
Through Datalogic SyncNet4 technology, using primary/secondary or Ethernet point to point connectivity. That is how top, side and front reading positions are consolidated into a single result per item.
What are the equivalent models to the Matrix 830?
The comparable high resolution readers are the Keyence SR-5000W and SR-5000X, the Cognex DataMan 580 and the Zebra FS80. Sensor resolutions in this class range from about 9 MP to 28 MP, so the comparison table on this page is worth reading carefully before treating any of them as interchangeable.
