Telemecanique Plastic Body Limit Switches
Plastic-bodied Telemecanique limit switches use a monolithic thermoplastic enclosure. Telemecanique describes the monolithic plastic versions as dedicated to repetitive machines β high-cycle, predictable applications where the switch is never struck and where corrosion resistance and cost matter more than impact strength.
The monolithic plastic series
XCKN is the plastic version of the Compact range, XCKS the plastic Classic series in CENELEC EN 50041 format, and XCMN the plastic Miniature series in EN 50047 format. Each mirrors a metal-bodied equivalent, so a machine can be specified in plastic and later upgraded to metal without changing mounting or wiring.
XCKW and XCMW extend the plastic range into wireless, battery-less limit switches β energy-harvesting devices that transmit on actuation without a cable run, useful on rotating tables and moving gantries where cabling is the problem.
Corrosion resistance
The main technical advantage of thermoplastic over zamak is that it does not corrode. In food processing, water treatment, chemical handling and coastal installations, a die-cast zinc body will eventually bloom and seize its threads, while a moulded body will not.
Sealing is IP66 and IP67 to IEC 60529 on compact plastic references, meaning full dust exclusion plus protection against temporary immersion β a higher water rating than the IP66 of the Classic metal range.
What you give up
Impact resistance. Plastic-bodied compact references such as XCKP2118M12 are rated IK04 against IK05 for the metal Classic range. Thermoplastic also has a narrower practical temperature window near the upper limit and less resistance to hot swarf, weld spatter and solvents.
Mounting rigidity is lower, so on high-vibration installations a metal body holds alignment better over years of service.
Hybrid construction
Several references combine both materials. XCKP2118M12 pairs a plastic body with a zamak head β the head takes the mechanical load and wear, the body provides corrosion resistance and cost saving. In a 31 Γ 65 Γ 30 mm envelope it offers 1NC+1NO snap action contacts with an M12 connector, IP66/IP67 sealing and IK04 impact rating, mounting on two elongated 4.3 Γ 6.3 mm holes at 22 mm centres.
This hybrid approach is usually the right answer where the target contacts the head hard but the body itself is protected.

Frequently asked questions
Are plastic limit switches as reliable as metal ones?
Electrically, yes β the contact block is identical and rated the same. Mechanically, plastic bodies have lower impact resistance (IK04 against IK05) and less rigidity. On clean, repetitive machinery where nothing strikes the switch, a plastic body will last as long as a metal one.
Which is better for washdown environments?
Plastic. Thermoplastic does not corrode, and compact plastic references carry IP67 as well as IP66, giving protection against temporary immersion. For food and beverage washdown, a plastic body with stainless steel roller is the usual specification.
What is a monolithic plastic limit switch?
Monolithic means the body is moulded as a single piece rather than assembled from parts. This removes joints that could admit water or dust and is the construction Telemecanique uses on the XCKN, XCKS and XCMN series.
What are wireless limit switches used for?
XCKW and XCMW are battery-less wireless limit switches that harvest energy from the actuation itself. They are used where running a cable is impractical β rotating tables, moving gantries, and retrofits into machines with no spare cable route.
