Telemecanique Metal Body Limit Switches

Metal-bodied Telemecanique limit switches use a zamak (zinc alloy) die-cast enclosure. Zamak gives dimensional stability, impact resistance and heat tolerance that a moulded thermoplastic body cannot match, which is why metal bodies remain the default for heavy industry, machine tools and any installation where the switch may be struck.

Which series use metal bodies

The Classic range is zamak-bodied throughout: XCKM with three cable entries and XCKL with one, both in CENELEC EN 50041 format. The Industrial XCKJ series uses the most robust head in the family on a fixed plug-in metal body, also EN 50041, and is the range built specifically for heavy-duty service.

In the Compact range, XCKP, XCKT and XCKD combine a metal head with a compact body for higher performance than an all-plastic equivalent. In the Miniature EN 50047 range, XCMD provides a metal head in a small-format body. XCRT uses a full metal enclosure for belt shift monitoring.

Mechanical and environmental performance

Metal bodies are rated IP66 to IEC 60529 and IK05 to EN 50102 for impact. Operating temperature is -25 to +70 Β°C with storage to -40 Β°C. Shock resistance is 50 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27 and vibration resistance 25 gn from 10 to 500 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6.

By comparison, compact plastic-bodied references such as XCKP2118M12 are rated IK04 β€” a lower impact class. Where a switch sits in a walkway, near a loading point, or anywhere a dropped tool or a mishandled load could strike it, the metal body is the correct specification.

Cable entry and mounting

Metal bodies accept tapped ISO M20 x 1.5 entries or Pg 11 cable glands, with a 1/2" NPT conduit adapter available for North American installations. XCKM offers three entries, allowing cable routing to be chosen at installation and permitting daisy-chained wiring; XCKL offers one for simpler installations.

The die-cast body holds thread and mounting-hole tolerances better than moulded plastic over the life of the machine, which matters where the switch is removed and refitted during maintenance.

When metal is worth the cost

Specify metal for machine tools, presses, foundry and forging equipment, cranes and hoists, outdoor and semi-outdoor installations, high-vibration mounting, and any position where physical impact is foreseeable. Plastic bodies are the better economic choice on clean, repetitive indoor machinery where nothing will strike the switch.

Metal versus plastic body

Property Metal (zamak) Plastic (thermoplastic)
Impact rating IK05 IK04
Ingress protection IP66 IP66 / IP67
Corrosion Can bloom, threads can seize Does not corrode
Heat and swarf Tolerates hot swarf, weld spatter Narrower practical window
Mounting rigidity Holds alignment under vibration Lower rigidity
Electrical rating Identical β€” set by contact block Identical β€” set by contact block

All OsiSense XC models carry IEC/EN 60947-5-1, UL 508 and CSA C22.2 No 14 approval, with CCC on selected references.

Frequently asked questions

What is zamak and why is it used for limit switch bodies?

Zamak is a zinc-aluminium die-casting alloy. It is used because it holds fine dimensional tolerances, resists impact and heat far better than moulded thermoplastic, and can be cast with integral threaded cable entries and mounting features.

What is the difference between IK04 and IK05?

IK ratings under EN 50102 classify impact resistance. IK05 withstands a higher impact energy than IK04. Metal-bodied Classic range switches are rated IK05; compact plastic-bodied references such as XCKP2118M12 are rated IK04.

Which metal Telemecanique limit switch is the most robust?

The XCKJ Industrial series, described by Telemecanique as having the most robust head in its category, on a fixed plug-in body in CENELEC EN 50041 format. It is the range intended for heavy-duty industrial service.

Do metal limit switches have different electrical ratings than plastic ones?

No. Electrical ratings are set by the contact block, not the body. XE2p blocks are rated AC-15 A300 at Ue 240 V, Ie 3 A with Ithe 10 A regardless of body material.
