Telemecanique Plunger Limit Switches
A plunger limit switch is actuated by direct linear pressure on a shaft that protrudes from the switch head. It is the simplest and most durable head configuration in the OsiSense XC range, rated for 20 million operating cycles β the highest mechanical durability of any head type β because there is no pivot to wear.
End plunger and roller plunger
A plain end plunger, as on XCKL110H7, presents a flat or domed metal tip and is actuated by a target moving directly along the plunger axis. It offers the highest repeatability of any head because the actuation point is fixed and there is no lever geometry to introduce error.
A roller plunger, as on XCMD2102C12 and XCMD2102L1, mounts a steel roller on the plunger tip. This allows a target to approach at a slight angle or with a small lateral component without scuffing the plunger face, while keeping the short, precise action of a linear head. One-way horizontal roller plungers are available where the target must actuate in one direction only.
Why plungers last longest
The Classic range is rated at 20 million operating cycles for plunger actuation, against 15 million for a 30Β° cam driving a lever and 10 million for multi-directional heads. The plunger moves in a single axis through a sealed bore with no pivot bearing, so the only wear surfaces are the shaft and its seal.
This makes plungers the economical choice on very high cycle applications, even though the initial cost is similar to a lever head.
Mounting and overtravel
Plunger heads demand accurate mounting. The target must not overtravel beyond the plunger's rated stroke or the head will be damaged, so a mechanical hard stop is normally designed into the machine. This is the main practical disadvantage against a lever head, which tolerates significant overtravel by rotating.
Miniature XCMD bodies follow the EN 50047 format and suit tight installations; XCKL and XCKM Classic bodies follow EN 50041 and offer one and three cable entries respectively.
Typical applications
Machine tool axis end stops, mould and die closure confirmation, clamp and fixture position, cylinder end-of-stroke detection, tray and magazine presence sensing, and any application where the target arrives head-on and repeatability to a fraction of a millimetre matters.
Plunger head selection
| Head | Approach | Repeatability | Typical reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| End plunger | Exactly along the plunger axis | Highest | XCKL110H7 |
| Roller plunger | Slight angle or lateral component | High | XCMD2102C12 |
| One-way roller plunger | One direction of travel only | High | XCMD series |
| Roller lever (compare) | Lateral, sweeping past | Good | XCKP2118M12 |
All OsiSense XC models carry IEC/EN 60947-5-1, UL 508 and CSA C22.2 No 14 approval, with CCC on selected references.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Telemecanique plunger limit switch last?
Plunger heads in the OsiSense XC Classic range are rated for 20 million operating cycles mechanically. Electrical life depends on the load; resistive loads at a fraction of rated current will approach mechanical life, while inductive loads at full rating reduce it considerably.
What happens if the target overtravels the plunger?
The head can be damaged. Plunger heads have a defined stroke and a limited overtravel allowance. Design a mechanical hard stop into the machine so the target cannot drive the plunger beyond its rated travel, or use a roller lever head, which tolerates overtravel by rotating.
Should I choose an end plunger or a roller plunger?
Use an end plunger where the target approaches exactly along the plunger axis and stops cleanly. Use a roller plunger where the target has any lateral or angular component to its motion, so it rolls rather than scuffs across the plunger face.
Are plunger limit switches available with M12 connectors?
Yes. References such as XCMD2102C12 provide an M12 connector; XCMD2102L1 provides a 1 m pre-wired cable. Tapped ISO M20 x 1.5 and 1/2" NPT cable entries are also available across the range.
