Why There Is No Single Price for a Matrix Scanner
A fixed industrial scanner is not a catalogue item in the way a proximity switch is. The same model name covers several sensor resolutions, three or four lens technologies, five illumination options and a long accessory list - and the difference between the cheapest and the most capable build of one family can be several times over.
That is why this page sets out what moves the price rather than quoting a figure. Once you know which of these apply to your line, a quotation becomes a two-line email rather than a negotiation.
All specifications referenced below come from the July 2026 Datalogic technical comparison, which is published in full on the individual model pages linked further down.
The Seven Things That Move the Price
Work down this list and the spread between two quotes usually explains itself.
| Factor | What changes |
|---|---|
| Sensor resolution | 0.3 MP on a Matrix 120 through to 28 MP on a Matrix 930. Resolution is the single biggest step in cost across the range. |
| Lens technology | Fixed focus is cheapest; an electronic or liquid lens costs more but removes mechanical refocusing between product changeovers; C-mount optics add the lens as a separate line. |
| Illumination set | Red, white, blue, IR and UV options, with or without polariser and diffuser. More illumination options means more flexibility and more cost. |
| Code grading | ISO/IEC 15416 and 16022 / 18004 / 29158 grading is a licensed capability on some configurations, not a free feature. |
| AI decoding | The Matrix 220 XAI and its DecodeX software carry a premium over the STD build - justified only if your marks are genuinely difficult. |
| Accessories | Brackets, cables, connector blocks and separate illuminators. Frequently the reason one quote looks cheaper than another. |
| Quantity and channel | Single unit, project quantity or annual OEM volume - and whether the unit is ex-stock or on indent. |
How to Compare Two Quotes Fairly
Ask for both on the same basis and the comparison becomes trivial.
- Quote per station, not per partReader plus lens plus illuminator plus bracket plus cable. A per-station number is comparable; a reader-body number is not.
- Match the configuration, not the family"Matrix 320" is not a specification. The LED count, lens focal length and illumination colour all have to match before two numbers mean anything.
- Confirm what is licensedCode grading and advanced decoding may be chargeable capabilities rather than included features.
- Check the interface is includedSome fieldbus support is native; some needs a gateway that nobody put on the quote.
- Separate GST, freight and packingSo the ex-works comparison is clean.
- Ask about the second unitStock status and lead time in eighteen months matters more than the first delivery date, because that is when the line is down.
